Les entretiens de Baseball France : Ariel Soriano

 

COVID19 oblige, la plupart des championnats de baseball sont reportés (à l'exception de la Korean Baseball Organization). Au milieu de cette inactivité forcée, rien moins qu'un ancien MVP (2018) et champion D1 2019 pour répondre à nos questions : il s'agit d'Ariel Soriano.

Ariel, voici un mois devait se dérouler le World Baseball Qualifier 2020. Pour toi et pour l'équipe, on suppose que l'incertitude puis l'annulation n'ont pas été des moments faciles.

C'était très difficile compte tenu du temps et des efforts produits pour être à notre top physiquement et mentalement.

Au fait, ça fait quoi d'être coaché par un triple vainqueur des World Series (2010, 2012 et 2014) et futur “Hall of Famer” ?

C'est vraiment l'une des meilleures expériences de ma carrière, une de celles que je n'oublierai jamais. Bruce Bochy est vraiment quelqu'un de très intelligent sur et en dehors du terrain.

L'aspect physique de la préparation avait été certainement vu en amont. On peut alors imaginer que le staff s'est plutôt concentré sur la tactique avec un effectif qui, sans être dépourvu de “gros bras” - n'est-ce pas Ariel - est plutôt orienté small-ball. Vrai ou faux ?

C'est vrai mais l'équipe s'est préparée de façon incroyable et nous sommes allés au bout de nous-mêmes pour nous renforcer sur nos faiblesses.

Deux matchs de préparation ont eu lieu face à des joueurs de Minor League des San Francisco Giants (victoire 3-2 et défaite 0-5). Logan Webb était sur le monticule pour la seconde rencontre et devrait prochainement avoir sa chance en MLB. On a également pu noter que plusieurs de vos adversaires évoluent habituellement en AAA. A l'issue de ces rencontres, quel est ton ressenti sur le niveau de l'Equipe de France et ses chances d'accrocher une qualification pour la World Baseball Classic 2021 ?

A la fin de la journée, j'étais super heureux parce que jouer contre des joueurs des Giants de niveau AAA et prouver que nous pouvions rivaliser avec eux, c'est le signe certain que l'équipe est prête à se qualifier, que nous avons une bonne défense, de bons batteurs et de bons lanceurs, mais surtout que nous pouvons compter sur l'expérience de Monsieur Bochy.

Bruce Bochy et son staff US ne connaissaient pas la plupart des joueurs de l'effectif avant le stage de Tucson. La compétition étant repoussée, en a-t-il profité pour vous donner des axes de travail personnalisés ?

Nous nous sommes entraînés avant d'arriver à Tucson et Monsieur Bochy a reçu des rapports sur chacun de nous. Mais lorsque nous sommes arrivés en Arizona, il a pu tout observer plus clairement. Nous avons alors eu un meilleur entrainement et avons bénéficié de toute son expérience.

La préparation avant un tournoi majeur, c'est certainement beaucoup de travail... mais peut-être aussi quelques anecdotes, Ariel ?

Cela demande énormément d'entrainement et d'effort. Mais surtout prendre du plaisir dans le jeu est la clé pour être capable d'utiliser tout ce que vous avez appris sur le terrain. Par exemple lorsque je jouais pour les Tampa Bay Rays, j'ai appris que je devais arrêter de m'inquiéter de ce qui pouvait arriver demain et jouer dans le moment présent en donnant tout. Cela aura un effet positif. Jour après jour... Un lancé à la fois.

Baseball France interviews: Ariel Soriano

Due to COVID19, most baseball championships are postponed (with the exception of the Korean Baseball Organization). During this inactivity imposed on us, nothing less than a former MVP (2018) and D1 2019 champion to answer our questions: I name Ariel Soriano.

Ariel, the World Baseball Qualifier 2020 was scheduled a month ago. For you and for the team, we assume that the state of uncertainty and then the cancellation were not easy moments to go through.

It was very difficult, since we invested time, efforts and established in the best physical and mental conditions.

By the way, what does it feel like to be coached by a man three-time a World Series winner (2010, 2012 and 2014) and future Hall of Famer ?

It truly is one of the best experiences in my career, one of those I will nerver forget. Bruce Bochy is a very smart character on the field of play and off it.

The physical aspect of the preparation had certainly taken care of beforehand. One can then imagine that the staff focused mainly on tactics with the squad which is rather oriented small-ball although it's not devoid of “big guns” , isn't it Ariel. Is that true or false?

It is true, the team prepared in an incredible way, we went big to strengthen ourselves in our weaknesses.

Two pre competition games were played against Minor League players of the San Francisco Giants (win 3-2 and loss 0-5). At the end of those matches, how do you feel about the level of the French team and its chances of qualifying for the 2021 World Baseball Classic?

At the end of the day, I was very happy, because playing with high-level players like the Giants' AAA and showing that you can compete against them, is a good sign that we are ready to qualify, we have good defense, good batting and good pitchers. but especially the experience of Mr Bochy.

Bruce Bochy and his U.S. staff didn't know most of the players on the roster before the Tucson training camp. With the competition postponed, did he take the opportunity to give personnal advice to each player ?

Before arriving at Tucson we had training, Mr Bochy had received reports from each of the players, but when we arrived in Arizona he could see everything more clearly, and we received better training, and we took advantage of Bochy's experience.

Preparing for a major tournament certainly means a lot of work and is probably at the origin of several anecdots. Ariel?

It takes a lot of training and effort. But above all, enjoying the game, that is the key to being able to use everything you learned on the field, for example when I played with Tampa Bay Rays, I learned that I had to stop worrying about what might happen tomorrow and play at the moment and everything. It will come out well. Day by day ... one launch at a time.
